Can I use a QL-1000 3-light set up for photography?
I have been looking into purchasing a QL-1000 3-light softbox with boom kit for my home photography studio, but I see most reviews or listings refer to video more than photography? What is the reason? Wouldn't this just be another form of continuous light? What am I missing?
Yes, you could use them. However, any continuous light source is better suited to video than still photography. Also, if I am not mistaken, these lights are not daylight balanced, which means you would need a proper color correction gel on your lens to have your color correct and / or use a white balance tool, or set your camera to the known Kelvin temperature of these bulbs, which I think is 3200 Kelvin.
These are not the cool running compact fluorescent photo bulbs. Continuous lights are also often called "hot" lights, for good reason. These WILL get HOT. This can be uncomfortable for any human subject. These type of lights are more typically used for product photography. A piece of jewelry is not going to complain about the heat or constant bright light. Even with three of these lights at full power, you may still be forced to use a higher ISO and / or slower shutter speed than you would with strobe lighting. Also, don't forget the effect on your utility bill. These lights will EAT electricity and you will definitely see the effect on your electric bill if you use them often.
Strobe lighting just offers so many advantages to the hot lights. Any decent strobe unit will have a modeling light so you can see how the light will look on your subject.
So, you are not really missing anything. Yes, these are pretty much just another form of continuous light, but that is the problem. There is a reason strobe lighting finds far more followers among pro photographers. It avoids the many dis-advantages of continuous lights. If you really feel you want to work with continuous lighting, why not research and look into using the kits that use photographic compact fluorescent bulbs?

ADD: I just noticed the answer above me that came in while I was typing. I do not believe you can use CF lights with that kit. That kit has dimmers, which cannot be done with a CF light. A housing that uses CFL will have on off switches for turning lights in the unit on or off. You cannot use any type of dimming switch such as in the QL units and install a CF bulb. I would strongly suggest you NOT get the QL kit and try to use CF lights in it. Get a kit designed to use CF lights, though I still suggest using strobe lighting.
