What type of lighting should I use in my studio?
I'm adding to my lighting set up that I currently have in my in-home studio and want to make the best financial and quality decision possible....who doesn't? I currently use a daylight bulb through a shoot through umbrella camera left (most often) and a 36-inch softbox with my 430EXII speedlight camera right. My problem, obviously is too much shadow on the left. I've used a reflector, but without an assistant and not much space to work with, my set up is very limiting. I would like to get a 3-light set up but am trying to decide if continuous light or strobe light would be best. I also shoot weddings and would like something powerful but portable, so I'm thinking strobe.....convenience, price point, and quality are key. Suggestions? Also, I don't want to lug around a ton of cords and power packs....I know I'm asking a lot, but there has to be such an animal out there.
I'd recommend another speedlight - as money is tight, consider going for a third party fully manual flash.
I use Yongnuo YN560's - about the same spec power wise & zoom head as a Canon 580 speedlight. With flash instead of continuous lighting, you have more options to vary the flash/ambient mix (with continuous lights, it's all ambient). They cost around £40-50 each.
Another speedlight would be lightweight & portable - studio flashes are bulky & difficult to transport & of course need a decent sized (& heavy) power pack if you are not near mains electricity.
What are you using to trigger your flash? I recommend the RF602 or 603 radio triggers - very reliable & a great range - being radio signals, they don't suffer from line of sight problems of optical triggers. A set of RF602's costs around £18.
I used two YN560's triggered with RF602's for this strobist swim shoot;
