Sigma 10-20 Review
One of the more popular interchangeable lens products on the market right now is the 10-20mm lens made by Sigma. This Japanese lens product is a fan favorite due to not only its look and feel but also its price relative to some of its competitors in the interchangeable lens market. Sigma lenses can be used not only on Sigma camera models but also top brands such as Canon and Nikon among others. These lenses come in Telephoto and Wide Angle versions and can be used in multiple settings by all levels of photographers both pro and newbie. This writeup will focus on the Wide Angle 10-20 mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon mount but surely those looking for reviews on other similar Sigma models with varying apertures and dimensions would benefit from browsing this Sigma 10-20mm Review.
Sigma 10-20mm Lens Feel and Appearance
On first look at the Sigma 10-20, this lens undoubtedly meets the eyeball test in terms of appearance and style. The standard black rubberized color scheme along with the white numbers and letters should fit any style of camera this lens will be used with. The solid gold ring adds a classy touch to an already clean look, although purists may not particularly like this addition. It comes with a 2 lens caps (rear and front), a lens hood (nice free addition) and a zippered carrying case that is evenly padded unlike other competition lenses. At a rough weight of 1 lb, most users should be able to hold it for any length of shooting time however those with neck or shoulder issues need to be wary during longer shoots. The lens is easy to connect and the manual focus and zoom operation is smooth but not too much to lose the feel and action of the lens. The action is quiet and brisk in the manual mode without even powering on. Overall feel and appearance receives a full 5 out of 5 stars.
Sigma 10-20mm Lens Performance
Once the camera is turned on, you get a much better feel of the Sigma 10-20mm quality. The lens autofocus is smooth as can be and ultra quiet for a wide angle lens, very important features in the professional photography realm to avoid distraction. In addition, the HSM autofocus is lightning fast even in low light conditions and the focusing perfectly precise. One nice feature is that this is an internally focusing lens meaning the act of focusing does not turn the manual focus ring. One thing of note is the focus and zoom directions are the opposite of the Canon lenses so those who are usual Canon lens users will need to adjust to this difference. All in all, the lens performance gets a 5 out of 5 stars.
Sigma 10-20mm Picture Sharpness
The Sharpness of the pictures producted by the Sigma 10-20 is very good and well above standards. When editing or magnifying the pictures, this lens may not produce pictures quite as sharp as some of the more high end lenses from Nikon. Some of the photos could have been a little bit more defined in terms of the human features but considering the vast price difference between this Sigma 10-20 lens and comparable Nikon models, sometimes as much as 50% of the cost, we would recommend going with the Sigma. Sharpness receives a 4.5 out of 5 stars due to the noted sharpness decline at the wide edges of the picture.
Picture Color and Saturation
Since the Sigma 10-20 has a 2 mm wider focal length than any of the Nikon model, the mentality many users make in terms of cropping during editing can be eliminated. The color on all of the pictures taken is vibrant and very rich without being too rich or deep. The contrast is also excellent for all picture settings and backdrops, with outdoor ones being some of the best you can ask for. We have read other reviews taking about cloud and mountain photographs being especially nice with this lens and we could only assume this would be true with its great contrast feature. Without question the best aspect of this camera is that with this wide-angle lens, you see pictures that you truly didn’t even know were there. Quite an exciting thought for all photo junkies. Color and saturation get a solid 5 out of 5 stars.
We hope you can take away some quality pieces of experience out of our Sigma 10-20 review and can now make the best decision for your camera usage. This lens can be found for as little as $480, almost half as much as comparable Nikon models, so we would give the go ahead on a solid buy.

Nikon reverse ring - trouble getting an image?
I just got a 67mm reverse ring for my AF-S Nikkor 18-105 (stock lens for D90). When i put the ring on my lens, and put it onto the camera, the aperture says F-- on the screen - this makes sense since there is no aperture ring. however - when looking through the viewfinder, there is almost no light. everything looks black until just at the focal length, and at that point everything is still almost black. When i take a picture, the image is completely black. even at as long as 1" shutter speed. is there any way to change up the aperture? also, how can i get more light into the image?
You'll need to open the aperture on your lens one way or another...If you don't have a manual aperture ring you'll probably need to manually operate the aperture lever on the back of the lens and hold it open while you take the shot. Not ideal, but without an aperture ring you don't have a great deal of choice.
Reversers are really designed for lenses with aperture ring adjustment.
